Ole Miss vs Texas is the Saturday night SEC game on ABC this week. The seventh-ranked Rebels visit Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin on October 24, and kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Eastern (23:30 UTC). Ole Miss is 5-1. Texas is 4-2 and has lost two in a row, both by the same 27-24 score.

A month ago the order was the other way round. Texas was No. 1 in the rankings for three straight games in September and early October, through the trip to Dallas for Oklahoma on October 10. Two defeats later the Longhorns are 19th. Ole Miss moved from ninth to seventh after beating Missouri 31-3 last weekend.

The path there is easy to trace in the weekly rankings. Texas was fifth for its opener against Texas State, fourth the week Ohio State came to Austin, and first from the UTSA game on. Ole Miss was ninth for each of its first two games and has been in the top ten for every game it has played. The coaches poll this week has the Rebels seventh as well and the Longhorns 18th.

Ole Miss vs Texas kickoff and the broadcast

ESPN's listing for the game names ABC as the national broadcaster. Austin runs on Central time, so the scoreboard clock in the stadium will say 6:30 p.m. when the ball is kicked. Fans on the West Coast get a 4:30 p.m. start. In Britain it is 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 25, still on summer time, because the UK clocks only go back at 2 a.m. that night. The game is listed on our NFL and college football page, where every start is shown on the clock of the device you are reading on.

Six games each, one opponent in common

Both teams have played Florida this season, and both lost to the Gators. Ole Miss went to Gainesville on September 26 and was beaten 52-28. No other opponent has scored more than 38 on the Rebels. Texas hosted Florida last Saturday and lost 27-24, seven days after losing 27-24 to Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl.

Here is how the two schedules have run, week by week. Both had October 3 off.

Per game that works out to 37.5 points scored and 23.8 allowed for Ole Miss, and 30.2 scored and 17.8 allowed for Texas. The Rebels have put up 44 more points in the same number of games. The Longhorns have given up 36 fewer.

Texas and the three-point games

Four of the six Texas games were decided by three points or less. The first two went its way: 24-23 over Ohio State, then ranked No. 1, on September 12, and 20-17 at Tennessee two weeks later. The last two did not. The other wins, against Texas State and UTSA at home, came by 52 and 24 points. At 1-2 in conference play, Texas sits 12th of the 16 SEC teams in ESPN's standings table.

Arch Manning has completed 106 of 166 passes, 63.9 percent, for 1,295 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Ryan Wingo is the top receiver with 26 catches for 345 yards and three scores, and Hollywood Smothers leads the rushers with 289 yards on 65 carries. The defense has the biggest single number on either roster: Colin Simmons has 10.5 sacks. Rasheem Biles leads the team in tackles with 48.

Ole Miss and the afternoon in Gainesville

Take away the Florida game and the Rebels have won everything. The opener against Louisville at Nissan Stadium in Nashville came down to three points. LSU arrived in Oxford ranked seventh and left with a 32-24 loss. Ole Miss was fourth in the poll before the Florida trip, dropped back to ninth, and has since beaten Vanderbilt and Missouri by a combined 83-20. Missouri was ranked 13th when it came to Oxford.

Trinidad Chambliss has thrown for 1,676 yards on 142-of-210 passing, 67.6 percent, with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions. Kewan Lacy has 352 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 62 carries. Deuce Alexander has 35 catches for 523 yards and five scores. On defense Blake Purchase leads the team with 3.5 sacks and Luke Ferrelli with 39 tackles.

Where the game sits in the SEC table

Ole Miss is 3-1 in the league. In ESPN's standings only four teams have a single conference loss: Georgia and Kentucky at 4-1, Tennessee and Ole Miss at 3-1. Texas and Oklahoma are both 1-2.

Neither schedule gets easier after Saturday. Texas has Mississippi State at home on October 31, then trips to Missouri and LSU, a home game with Arkansas, and Texas A&M at Kyle Field on Friday, November 27. Ole Miss plays Auburn and Georgia in Oxford, goes to Oklahoma on November 14, and finishes at home against Wofford and Mississippi State.
