Flyers vs Sabres is Wednesday's national NHL game: Philadelphia visit the KeyBank Center in Buffalo on October 21, with the puck due to drop at 7:30 p.m. Eastern (23:30 UTC). ESPN lists TNT and truTV as the national broadcasters. It is the first of three meetings between the clubs this season, and it catches both at an odd moment. The Flyers went nine games without a win before beating Ottawa and Colorado at home, while the Sabres come off a road trip that ended with an overtime loss in Montreal.
Start time around the world
The schedule converts every start to the reader's own clock, but here is the same faceoff in a few common zones. UK readers should note it falls just after midnight on Thursday.

Philadelphia's slow start, in numbers
The Flyers are 2-6-3 with seven points from 11 games. The first nine went 0-6-3, and the opener set the tone: a 7-0 home loss to Pittsburgh on September 30. Over those nine games they scored 11 goals and gave up 33. Three of the defeats came after regulation (overtime at New Jersey and against Carolina, a shootout against Seattle), so the point column is not completely bare.
Scoring has been the sticking point. Before Saturday, Philadelphia had not scored more than two goals in any game. They then scored three in each of the next two, beating Ottawa 3-1 on Saturday and Colorado 3-2 on Monday. Six of their 11 games have been decided by one goal.
The road is where it has gone worst. Away from home the Flyers are 0-4-1, with six goals for and 16 against. Wednesday is their first road game since a 2-1 loss in Detroit on October 15.
Matvei Michkov leads the team with six goals and seven points, and Trevor Zegras has a team-high five assists. ESPN's injury list for Philadelphia is long: Travis Konecny (lower body), Owen Tippett, Cam York and Rasmus Ristolainen (all upper body) are on injured reserve, and Tyson Foerster is day-to-day with a hand injury.
Buffalo after a week on the road
The Sabres are 4-3-2 with 10 points from nine games. They have been better at home (3-2-0) than away (1-1-2), and the last three games were all on the road. Two of them were in Montreal, and both went past regulation: a shootout loss on October 13 and a 4-3 overtime defeat on Saturday. In between they won 5-4 in overtime in Toronto.
Buffalo have scored 27 goals and allowed 34. Three lopsided defeats (6-3 at Columbus, 4-0 to Dallas and 4-1 to Utah) account for most of that gap. The Sabres have not played since Saturday, so they get three clear days of rest; Philadelphia played on Monday.
Tage Thompson leads Buffalo with five goals and nine points, and Owen Power has six assists. Rasmus Dahlin and Justin Danforth are listed as day-to-day with upper-body injuries. Jason Zucker, goalie Alex Lyon and Matt Grzelcyk are on injured reserve.
Flyers vs Sabres side by side
Both teams reached the second round of the playoffs last spring, which makes the slow starts stand out more. The table puts last season next to this one.
| Flyers | Sabres | |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-26 record | 43-27-12 | 50-23-9 |
| 2025-26 points | 98 | 109 |

| 2026 playoffs | Beat Pittsburgh 4-2, lost to Carolina 4-0 | Beat Boston 4-2, lost to Montreal 4-3 |
| 2026-27 record | 2-6-3 | 4-3-2 |
| 2026-27 goals for / against | 17 / 36 | 27 / 34 |
| Points leader | Michkov, 7 | Thompson, 9 |
The playoff exits were both painful in their own way. Carolina swept Philadelphia, with two of the four games going to overtime. Buffalo took Montreal the full distance and lost Game 7 at home, 3-2 in overtime, on May 18. Montreal has now beaten them twice more this month.
Two teams that keep going to overtime
One thread runs through both records. Philadelphia have gone past 60 minutes three times and Buffalo four times, so seven of the 20 games these clubs have played this season needed overtime or a shootout. Buffalo have also played five one-goal games of nine.
At home the Flyers are 2-2-2, with 11 goals scored and 20 conceded, and their only wins have come there. The Sabres' three home wins came against Chicago, Minnesota and Florida, the last of them a 5-3 game on October 12 that was their biggest scoring night at the KeyBank Center so far.
How last season's meetings went
The teams met three times in 2025-26 and Buffalo won two. Philadelphia won the first, 5-2 at home on December 3. The Sabres then won both games in Buffalo: 5-3 on December 18 and 5-2 on January 14. That is 12 goals for Buffalo and 10 for Philadelphia across the three.
This season the home split flips: after Wednesday in Buffalo, the clubs meet twice in Philadelphia, on November 17 and February 24, both at 7 p.m. Eastern.
What comes after Wednesday
Neither team plays again until Saturday. The Flyers return home for an afternoon game against Anaheim at 1 p.m. Eastern on October 24, and the Sabres travel to Washington for a 7 p.m. Eastern start the same day.
The game page for Flyers at Sabres goes up on the schedule ahead of the faceoff, and every other game of the night is on the NHL schedule. If you want the divisions and the playoff format first, our NHL 2026-27 season guide has them, and the full schedule lists every sport for the day.
