San Francisco: four wins and the best point margin in the division
The 49ers opened the season on the other side of the world, beating the Rams 27-7 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. They then scored 35 against Miami and 36 in a shootout with Arizona before a 24-14 win over Denver last Sunday. That adds up to 122 points scored and 64 allowed, a margin of +58. Going into the weekend, ESPN's standings had only three unbeaten teams left in the league: San Francisco, Minnesota and Kansas City.
Brock Purdy has been very efficient. Through four games he is 79 of 113 for 1,007 yards with 11 touchdown passes and one interception. Christian McCaffrey has 218 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns on 50 carries, and George Kittle has 244 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 16 catches. Fred Warner leads the defense with 40 tackles.
The bad news is on the defensive line. ESPN's injury report lists Nick Bosa (calf) and Mykel Williams (knee) as out for Sunday, along with defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. and safety Marques Sigle. Cornerback Upton Stout is questionable with a shoulder injury.
Seattle: the champions at 3-1
Seattle's title defense began with a 13-10 win over New England, a rematch of the Super Bowl, and continued with a 31-7 win in Arizona. The one loss came in Week 3, 33-31 at Washington. Last Sunday they beat the Chargers 30-23. The total is 105 points for and 73 against (+32), and the home record is 2-0.
Two quarterbacks have started. Drew Lock led the passing in the first two games (187 and 235 yards, four touchdowns between them), and Sam Darnold has led it in the last two, with 379 yards at Washington and 168 against the Chargers. The constant has been Jaxon Smith-Njigba. He has 32 catches for 481 yards and six touchdowns, and he has topped 100 yards in three of the four games. Leonard Williams has three sacks and Ernest Jones IV has 41 tackles.
Running back Zach Charbonnet (knee) is listed as out, and Emanuel Wilson has carried the load with 190 yards and a touchdown on 53 carries. Linebacker Chazz Surratt and cornerback Julian Neal are also out, and running back George Holani is questionable.
Last season's three meetings
The two teams met three times in the 2025 season, and the results moved sharply in one direction.
| Date (Eastern) | Game | Venue | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sept. 7, 2025 | Week 1 | Lumen Field | 49ers 17, Seahawks 13 |

San Francisco won the opener in Seattle by four points. The other two games were not close: Seattle allowed nine points across both and won the playoff game by 35. The Seahawks then beat the Rams 31-27 in the NFC Championship and New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX, which was played at Levi's Stadium, the 49ers' own ground. Seattle finished the 2025 regular season 14-3 and San Francisco 12-5; the 49ers had won a Wild Card game 23-19 in Philadelphia before the trip to Seattle.
What the standings look like
San Francisco lead the NFC West by a game. A Seattle win would leave the two level at 4-1; a 49ers win would put them two games clear with 12 to play.
| NFC West | W-L | Points for | Points against |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Francisco 49ers | 4-0 | 122 | 64 |
| Seattle Seahawks | 3-1 | 105 | 73 |
| Los Angeles Rams | 2-2 | 85 | 83 |
| Arizona Cardinals | 1-3 | 87 | 117 |
The Rams host Buffalo on Monday night and Arizona host Detroit in the same window as this game, so the division can shift again before Tuesday. San Francisco have already beaten both of them: the Rams in Melbourne and the Cardinals 36-30 in Week 3. The 49ers and Seahawks meet a second time on November 29 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, in Week 12, at 4:25 p.m. Eastern (21:25 UTC).
A short week for Seattle, a long one for San Francisco
The schedule after Sunday is uneven. Seattle play again four days later, at Denver on Thursday, October 15, at 8:15 p.m. Eastern (00:15 UTC Friday). San Francisco get eight days off before hosting Washington on Monday, October 19, at 8:15 p.m. Eastern (00:15 UTC Tuesday). After that the 49ers go to Atlanta on October 25 and Seattle host Kansas City that night.
