How the 2026-27 NBA season is laid out
Opening night is Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with three games: Boston at Detroit, Philadelphia at New York and Oklahoma City at San Antonio. After that, each of the 30 teams plays 82 regular-season games. The regular season finishes around April 11, 2027, the play-in tournament fills the following week, and the playoffs begin on or near April 17. The Finals are scheduled to end by late June.
The NBA Cup is played inside the regular season rather than alongside it. In November every team plays four group games on set tournament nights, and those games count in the standings like any others. Eight teams reach the knockout rounds in December, and the final is held in Las Vegas. The final is the one Cup game that does not count toward a team's 82, so the two finalists end the season with 83 games played.
The postseason, briefly
In each conference, seeds 1 to 6 go straight into the playoffs. Seeds 7 to 10 play in: the 7 seed hosts the 8 seed and the winner takes seventh place, the 9 seed hosts the 10 seed and the loser is out, and then the loser of the first game hosts the winner of the second for the eighth place. All four playoff rounds are best of seven. The Finals use a 2-2-1-1-1 pattern, so the team with the better record is at home for games 1, 2, 5 and 7.
What an NBA night looks like on this page
Weeknight slates are spread across the evening in the United States. The first games usually tip in the 7 o'clock hour on the East Coast and the last West Coast games about three hours later. In UTC that is one cluster between roughly 23:00 and 00:30 and another after 02:00, and the page turns those into your own time when it loads. A reader in Europe will see most games filed under the next morning, which is correct for them. Weekend afternoons add earlier tips, and Christmas Day normally has five national games back to back, from midday until late at night on the East Coast.
Games are grouped by day on the left and by league inside each day. Every row carries both team logos, the start time and, once the game begins, a live score with the quarter and the clock. A pulsing dot marks a game in progress. When a game is over the row shows the final score for the rest of the day, then drops off.
The NBA page is the basketball page, so other leagues land here as well when they are listed: EuroLeague, college basketball from November, and the WNBA in the summer. Each gets its own heading below the NBA block, which keeps an NBA Tuesday from being buried under a dozen European games.
What a game page shows
Open any row and the game page header shows both teams with their records, the tip time on your clock and the arena. During the game the score and the period refresh about once a minute without a reload. Under the header is the feed list. A row marked Main is the feed we picked for that game and it always goes first; the rows under it are other channels with a mirror number. A national TV game on a Saturday night may have six or seven rows, while a preseason game in early October may have one.
Each row opens the player in a new tab and leaves the game page where it was. If a stream freezes late in a close game, the quickest fix is to come back to that tab and take the next row down, which is faster than reloading the same player and waiting for it to buffer again.
A few habits that help
Rest days and back-to-backs mean that stars sit out some regular-season games, and the listing cannot tell you who is in the lineup. If you are opening a game for one player, check the team's injury report first. For playoff series, every game of a series has the same two team names, so the row for Game 3 may look identical to Game 2; the date block it sits under tells them apart.
